Australian Antarctic Road Sign

Way down South there is a 'road' called the 'A' line which runs approx 70kms between Casey Station and Wilkins Ice Runway - During the Antarctic Summer it is heavily used to transport people and equipment to Casey for the busy operational period. In times of poor visibility it's often hard to tell the difference between the sky and the ground which is known as having a poor 'horizon' - It's during these times that the 'cane lines' become useful as they stand out in the white nothingness. Cane lines are bamboo canes with flags, sometimes supported by weighed down barrels - They were a necessity before GPS and Radar became more commonplace but still line the way on the most popular routes.
